Costa Rica is famous for its wildlife reserves, and this was the main focus of our visit. The variation of habitats and critters was overwhelming. On one walk we saw 2 and 3-toed sloths, a boa, turtles, 3 types of monkeys including the squirrel monkeys (which are very rare and only found in 2 places in Costa Rica), many types of birds including humming birds many and insects, 2 species of bat, armadillo, 3 types of lizard, a salamander, and more - all in a 4 hour walk! On another walk we saw lots of birds including several Keel-Billed Toucans, Blue-Crowned Motmot, Broad-Billed Flycatcher, Brown Jay, Hoffman's Woodpecker, Emerald Toucanette, Roufus-and-White Wren, 2 different types of squirrels, White-Collared Swift, Turkey and Black Vultures, Kiskadee, Squirrel Cuckoo, Green-Spiny Lizard, Three-Wattled Bellbird, lots of cool insects including many blue Morphos, Flat-Tailed Hummingbird, Groove-Billed Ani! ![]() ![]()
One of the best things was just walking in the forest. While not much is primary there are large areas of quality forest that is in late stages of re-forestation and has massive biodiversity. Walking through cloud forest was really magical. |
